New Delhi: Three phases of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections have been successfully conducted, with the first three phases being held on April 11, 18 and 23. While the first and second phases saw the battle intesnsify in key constituencies in Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh, the third phase saw Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home turf of Gujarat and Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s ‘adopted’ seat Wayanad in Kerala go to polls.
It is a tough contest for supremacy in the Hindi-speaking belt of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar as the mahagathbandhan (grand coalition) of Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party and Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party have taken on the Bharatiya Janata Party with an exuding confidence.
Political pundits have predicted a non-majority National Democratic Alliance government in 2019, with the Bharatiya Janata Party losing out on a sizeable number of seats from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Maharashtra.
The BJP had secured an absolute majority in the 2014 general elections with 282 seats in the Lok Sabha. The Congress party was humbled after 10 years in power, won a measly 44 seats. However, bookies this year have bet on 245 seats for BJP and 77 for Congress.
Many might disagree with that number as the Congress have resurrected over the past four years and thwarted BJP’s juggernaut by winning crucial Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh – all BJP bastions, along with forming a coalition government in Karnataka last year with the Janata Dal (Secular) though the BJP secured the most number of assembly seats in the southern state of India.
The prediction by bookies are based on the polling of 303 seats in the first three phases, while polling for the rest of the 240 constituencies are set to be held on April 29, May 6, 12 and 19.
The Lok Sabha or Lower House of Parliament has a total of 543 seats and a single party or coalition that can together secure 272 seats can form a government.
